Gladiator II

This, probably useless, second installment in the Gladiator world starts some years after the first one.

It's really hard to talk about it without any spoilers, I'll do my best.

Let's start with the good stuff:

Great cgi for the big scale battle scene, it felt cruel and alive.✅

Nice sceneries and Rome is as beautiful as it can get here.

Any other director could've easily done a really bad job here, fortunately, not Ridley Scott.

The plot is a perfect example of great idea, poor execution. It had some really good twists and turns to leave you wonder what would've happened only to streamline itself in a pretty cheap way.

Some dialogues are boring and some are only convenient to the plot, in the majority of the situations the characters are "trying too hard to act".

In doing so we lose gravity and stakes in the story.

Certainly not a bad movie by any metric, however I think that with some tweaks it could've been a real masterpiece.

How Would I Fix It ?

• Avoiding spoilers, we need a first row seat to see the protagonist's rage and desperation, plus he needs to lose some of his coolness. It doesn't help.
