Fixing Super Mario
🔧Let's try to make it better
spoilers
First of all this idea is not at all original and i saw it performed for the first time from The Critical Drinker.
I'm talking about a fixing job of what doesn't work about a movie, to try to make it better.
In the Super Mario review i brought up some problems that it had and now as a thinking exercise i will try to offer simple solutions to them to make the whole movie a little bit better.🔧
The "what if" from the review where 3 but for the first one there is no easy fix (I'm talking about risking and not playing it safe ) and to fix that we would have to rewrite the whole script.🤷♂️
So we're left with two:
-Peach 👸
She's simply overpowered. Meaning she has no flaws, and the problem is that it's damn near impossible to relate to any character without flaws. So what about making her a little insecure about her appearances sice she's the only human in her realm? Wouldn't be a bad start.
In doing so we can make her care even more for Mario since he can make her feel normal and not "lonely" anymore.
-Bowser 🐢
First he's introduced properly as a menacing evil turtle who wants to take over the various realms to reign on them. We even get a taste of his really cool fire breath. But then, he suddenly becomes a gullable and self-mocking villain who's in love with Peach for no apparent reason (maybe because she's cute).
We could improve him as a character by keeping him menacing for all the scenes where he is commanding/in presence of his army or enemies, then, when he's alone we can show that he's lonely at the top and no one really understands him. That would give him a reason to fall in love with Peach, her being a princess might understand how he feels. This revolves on the old concept of "it's lonely at the top" and makes us understand why he believes that someone else in a similar position could have a relationship with him.
Concluding with a sweet note that i didn't mentioned in the review because it was hard to do without spoilering important scenes, i found the relationships between Mario and DK really cool.
Their initial dislike of each other turned to friendship at their lowest point both literally and figuratively, since they were defeated and inside the belly of the sea monster. They bond over their "daddy issues" in a genuine and heartfelt way, and together they get out of the monster to save their friends and families.
Kinda reminds me of Pinocchio that finds what he's really looking for where he least want to look. (Stole this beautiful phrase from Jordan Peterson)🤥
